A man can be that selfish and get away with it just barely, if he has a plausible motive, but here?! A book! I decided from the first few pages that Jahandar needed to die.Īnd he did in the end… just not how I expected him to – which was in the manner of Shahrzad or Irsa stabbing him through the heart or neck or just pushing him from a precipice or something. He truly is! I mean the safety of a god forsaken book is more precious to him than the safety of his own family. Speaking of which, Jahandar is such a swell dad. But unfortunately all we get is Tariq and Shahrzad arguing for the umptieth time, Irsa flirting with Rahim and Khalid sneaking out of the palace to help his people rebuild the city after disaster at Rey. That would have added a bit of intrigue to the mix, suspense and a little more tension in the first part. I think it would have been more interesting if they were plotting to, I dunno, secretly work together to demolish Khalid’s enemies from within, even though some of them were Shahrzad’s relatives. The first 30 % of the story is dedicated to Shahrzad and Khalid moping about one another. The loose ends were too prettily tied up, the ending happened way too quickly for me to even process it.

It was as if the the author did not take enough chances with the story. The reason I feel this way is because while the story had potential to be an epic war story filled with genuine betrayal, loss and heartbreak… it ended up rather conventional. Let me sum up my feelings for this book into one gif: May contain spoilers! Read at your own risk! After an attempt at finishing this series and failing miserably, I decided a few days ago that I was going to do it! Whether I liked it or not! And to tell the truth I did rather enjoy it 🙂
